For 24 years, the community lived under a boil water advisory — providing clean water to a city of hundreds of thousands while their own people could not drink from the tap. Accessible only by barge or ice road until Freedom Road was completed in 2019, the Nation persevered through decades of geographic isolation and systemic neglect. In 2021, Shoal Lake 40 opened its own award-winning water treatment plant and lifted the advisory for good. This development represents Nation-led investment in housing and community — turning resilience into lasting wealth for generations to come.
